Manisa dates back to ancient Lydian Magnesia on the Sipylus.‭ ‬The city,‭ ‬which later belonged to Byzantium,‭ ‬came under the rule of the Saruchanids in‭ ‬1313‭ ‬and became part of the Ottoman Empire in‭ ‬1398.‭ ‬Until the conquest of Constantinople‭ (‬1453‭)‬,‭ ‬it alternated with Bursa as the residence of the sultans.
