Characteristics Gyumri is located in western Armenia near the border with Turkey and has an area of 36 km². The city has around 170,000 inhabitants1. The city is known for its authentic Armenian urban architecture with stone town houses.

History Gyumri was founded in the 3rd millennium BC. BC and was settled in the 8th century BC. First mentioned as Kumaryi in the 1st century BC. The current city arose from a Russian fortress founded in 1837 and was the capital of a uyezd in Yerevan Governorate until the First World War.
